IMDEX 2011

I went with the ship's company for IMDEX last Friday. The international maritime defence expo had an exhibition hall full of high-tech industries and countries strutting their stuff, but we went straight for our base, where the foreign ships called out for a nice shot. Here are some of them.
The Mistral, berthed at the carrier spot. Out of the base's protected waters, since they tend to be nuclear powered and of concern to the RSN. Opposite it is the formidable but now seemingly dwarfed Arleigh Burke class US Destroyer, the USS McCampbell. The ship crew couldn't help themselves but pass cold jokes about the name and soup.
Here it is closer up. I like the strong leading lines, and I tried seeing if desaturating everything but the prominent yellow in the scene would be interesting. Turns out there isn't enough of the shade to pass off the effect.
This photo has been subjected to quite a lot of editing, so as to bring out the shades when it was rendered black and white. It's a Westland King operated by the Indian Navy. Helicopters play a pivotal role in anti-submarine warfare as their quick deployment and inability to be attacked by subs make it an asset many warships would like to have.
The Indonesian LHD Banda Aceh, a big vessel whose interior is ridiculously spacious. Think staircases you see in schools. On a ship. Open corridors big enough to sit a certain group of people singing around a guitar and some traditional drums. Gosh I wonder why they need so much unused space. And their tank deck is still smaller than ours.
On the McCampbell, with their forward anti-aircraft gun casting an imposing figure. At the rear lies the CIWS. Behind this weapon is the main SSM launch tube section, with the other located at the stern of the ship.
Man, US destroyers just look so slick and schweet.
The flight deck of the Banda Aceh, 'dressed up' for the expo.
