I mentioned my travelling up and down both ends of Singapore quite often these few weeks, passing by my old home, and this week I decided I wanted to look at some old photos of what used to be. It's more of a flashback for myself, but maybe you'll enjoy/ appreciate it too.
I'm glad I preserved some of these memories, and gosh, do I hope I've got even more eventful ones ahead of me.
Most recent of all of the pictures; one of what our new house once looked like. I still remember that day I asked Mark and Yichen if they would like to visit the place, not realising that the trip uphill was quite unwarranted for a blank spot in the neighbourhood. What can I say? I was thoroughly excited.
This was no doubt taken during one of those exam periods. Camera properties says it was taken 24th March 2006, four years ago, which puts it around the first CA in Secondary 2. Not sure how accurate that is though, because it also states it was taken at 12am, but I know very well that at that age, the only thing I would do at 12am would be to sleep soundly. In this picture, Joel is striking a pose we tended to do when we were bored studying. the blood would rush to our outstretched and lowered arms as we held the notes and studied to little avail.
Here's my brother, Isaac, seated at his old study table in the study. Those two chairs in the foreground were for Joel and I to share, when we used my computer. This was also almost exactly the same position from where Joel and I used our BB guns and fired at our 12th floor neighbour, who was conducting tuition lessons for many pupils.
That time, we were releasing some stress from studying for our 'O's, and the lights to the apartment were all off. Isaac placed a mirror next to his laptop (which is now in my hands) and watched as the perplexed students saw pellets bouncing off their tutor's ceiling.
There were many mornings when we woke up and discovered it was raining; the double-glazed glass cancelled off noise very effectively. It was an investment my dad found necessary from living next to the expressway. A much longer time ago, it was thin sliding windows that rattled loudly whenever it rained. This scene though was taken not in the wee hours, but near evening. That 'closed' sign on the window next to Joel's table and hanging on the window handle twice plunged 11 stories to the ground below.
Sunrise is nicely mirrored at our balcony window. Like now, there are still times when I wake up the earliest in the family, enjoying the peace and quiet for a little bit.
Back to School:
I still remember my D&T 'O' Level artefact: the so-called solution to an extension cord-cum-extension socket device, shaped like a jigsaw piece. It was not only extremely cumbersome, the mechanism was also temperamental. Still, I got an A in the end. No relative velocity for me, though.
Remember this? The Porsche belonged to a member of parliament gracing one of our Damai Speech Days. Everyone was ogling it at a distance, even the teachers. When he went up to the Hall, I took the liberty of taking this photograph with my K810. Until recently, Gabriel was still using the phone that's accompanied me through so much. (he's recently turned to the dark side and gotten himself an iphone)
Who couldn't forget the fountain when approaching the science block? I took this during one AV camp, don't ask me which.
Last but not least, here's an iconic picture any Damaian would remember. Outside 4E3 was a nice linear green. The grass on our side of the canal dividing both the park and our school caught fire more than once.
I found some videos too. These precious moving pictures do a much better job of reliving memories, sweet, boring or unpleasant. This one must have been one of those lazy days during a lunch break. Remember how so many in the top class of 4E1 stayed on to study?
Here's one that Yichen might like. Grossly amateur BF2 stunts, piloted by Joel and captured by me, on a platform that no longer works.
In the video, I berated Joel for good reason; he had climbed into the Bell to cover a distance of two meters on the Essex.
Going forward...
Here's the video taken by Ben during the AOH, when the high kneel had an easy way out, when no sergeant was screaming at your back to execute a proper contacting procedure, and when the smell of gunpowder was interesting rather than smelly and common. In another video I took, a marching group of soldiers in Pasir Laba Camp (or Pasir Labia, as some call it online) spoke to me as I recorded them, "Don't worry, you'll be doing this very soon!" I'm definitely less bored of it than my three other chiongsuah friends though.
Here we are again, just months ago. Swamped with barricades, tall grass and most importantly mosquitos, it's got to have been one of the most exciting moments of my life playing paintball in Malaysia. I sure do remember the quarrel Joel and I had outside the club though, as our friends patiently waited out yet another squabble. Haha...
Last but not least, the oldest video that I have in my 16 gigs of archived pictures and videos. I didn't know I still am using the same mug I was using four years ago. This particular scene comes after a really big steamboat dinner, I believe. That's me, with Joel recording. My mom had to point that out; I myself couldn't tell who it was. My face has changed much more than Joel over the years.
