Jeez. I know I'm supposed to spend this day doing econs, but... well...
This post is about an upcoming city simulator Cities XL, just to warn you, lest I force you to scroll through a dull post.
A really comprehensive preview can be found
here.
I like to think I appreciate the sim games genre, more specifically The Sims, Simtower, Sim City, Flight simulator among others. (Yes, this is hardly an exhaustive list.)
Simcity
I've liked the series, though it's kind of a tall order since I only played it seriously from 3000 onwards. (I only watched my brother play 1 and 2, never really played it. I do remember what was enjoyable about those were that its maps could be ported over to that ridiculous Sims driving/blasting game.)
However, I always felt seriously stifled by its 2d graphics, the fact that you can never have bodies of water above the water table, and the fact that, no matter how they tried, the 'globalisation' of the game never really took off. That is, neighbouring countries were little more interactive than texts. Most importantly of my gripes, the damn traffic networks were only able to create straight intersections, either at 45 degrees or perpendicularly. It just made the whole game seem half-real.
What I liked about it were the fact that there were different roads, the graphics were great when they came out, there was night and day, and that it was sufficently complex. Seriously, City Life and Simcity Societies were ridiculous dollops of s***.
If you are interested in reading the article, you'll see why, in my perspective, its my most anticipated game.
