I figured I might as well put this up before Joel did, plus, I'd give a less slamming view of him than Joel tends to merit. (Hey, it's true, no?)

The "him" in question refers to Ace Kindred Cheong, a regular forum contributor to the ST. In order to amass some scant research material on him, as well as to provide damning evidence of his ofttimes inane, self-indulging and amusing (in the wrong way) forum letter, I just did a search on his name, which yielded this blog. The blog seems well-written (as opposed to the usual teenaged banter you usually see) so I thought I'd stray from the topic first to highlight somethings I found quite neat in it.

"... an ethnic Chinese Singaporean (with a street-smart persona, or 'beng' if you like to call it"

"... the support from and solidarity of the Malay community triumphs over the Chinese community, the latter of which are generally more cynical, penny-counting, adopt a mind-my-own-business, and harbour other complementary mentalities."

So I read on to see his views on Ace, but it appears his views differ from mine; he's met Ace in person before, if you care to read through the post, and he's found him to be a nice guy, helping to search for his wallet even though they were complete strangers.

I haven't had that priviledge of meeting Ace in person before, but I must say that reading that post gave me a fresh perspective on Ace. Despite this, I do not change my stand, and find Ace a queer forum contributor. To press my case, I'll show you some excerpts from his contributed letters. But before that, you might want to see this ethnic Chinese-Singaporean-with-a-street-smart-persona's forum post, showing a totally different pespective (and use of language) as compared to the blog above. (Must I state that I don't agree with the poster's take? I hope it's obvious enough.)

Man, this guy has a lot of google search results. Anyway. Back to topic.

On the escape of Mas Selamat:
"I believe that it is wrong for the top man or any staff member involved in the case to take the blame, as everyone makes mistake at some point or another during the course of work."

Well, this doesn't gel with me. At all. Being at the top means you are a capable person in charge of overseeing company/public sector affairs. If not, you wouldn't have been placed in that seat, earning more money than your subordinates. If something goes wrong, whether or not you had seen to it, you damn well be responsible for it, after all, you're supposed to be managing the affairs of the company, unless of course that is up to another CEO in another sector of the company.

Furthermore, if everyone else makes mistakes and shouldn't take the blame for it, what sort of society and firm would that be? Why is it the average wage earner can be sacked over a folly, but not the top man? We all make mistakes, yes, but if we don't get punished for it, then society will be a truly fubar'ed place to be with.

On service in F&B outlets versus the looks of the service staff:

While his forum letter was slightly boring, he managed to amuse me by adding, in his letter, "(I would give 8.5 out of 10 for looks)" in referring to a 'pretty' waitress who served him once. In a forum letter. Yes, way.

Additionally, he also mentioned another "good looking" waiter who looked like Barack Obama. Well, I wouldn't want to be too quick to judge, but usually, guys don't write in to the forums to talk about good looking guys, lest they wish to come out the stuffy closet. Additionally, while Barack Obama looks fine for a president, I wouldn't go so far as to say he was good looking. Well, maybe if he were comparing presidential looks to Abe Lincoln, but I doubt that was his thrust.

Well, I know that if I end off here then it would be quite biased, seeing as I only have three instances to highlight, but finding his articles is proving time consuming for someone who needs to study now. So I'll leave it as that, and you can go do your own research if you have tons of time. (o hi chen) It's also good to note that it seems many people think he is a PAP bootlicker.
