I went for the Chancellor's Challenge Shield today, the current affairs quiz I joined some time ago (but did little to prepare for, save for reading the news more carefully and closely.) I got to chat quite a bit with Ms Hua, my GP tutor and SIMUN teacher.
The quiz involved quite a lot of educated guessing, guessing and processes of elimination for me. Seriously, I had confirmed answers on perhaps 15 questions, the rest were vague or very vague to me.
Entertainment:
Name the second book in the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer. (There were multiple choice answers, but I can't reproduce them here since I can't remember.)
Politics:
Name the first chairman of the PAP. (it isn't Lee Kwan Yew.)
Which state voted in favour of the McCain/Palin ticket? (still no clue, ain't gonna check it up.)
When the second round commenced, HCI, VJC and NUS got the top three positions and moved on to the next round, where there were true/false questions fielded, followed by open-ended questions.
Economics:
Which country embraced the Euro currency on the 1st of January 2009? (At least I think this was the question. The answer is Slovakia. Never would have guessed.)
The category mode of choosing question genres always went the same tack on both sub-rounds of the second round, with all three teams picking either Singapore or World politics first, then War and terrorism, then economics, followed by Science and Tech, with entertainment the last category to be chosen.
After a while, the event got a bit boring as many of the questions fielded were tough even for the teams up there. For example, (this is not the accurate question text) which vital supply route has recently been blocked off from US Army logistics?

Still, before the results were finally passed on the winning team, (HCI) the top 10 participants for the MCQ preliminary quiz were announced, and my classmate and Debate President Vijay got the 5th placing. Man, he's good. MJ also got a small mention of it being a new participant in the competition. I half felt like whooping when they said our name.
