Impossible. Freaking impossible.
I volunteered to be the IC of this inter-house economics debate on the budget 2009. Should have just waited out the awkward silence for some victim to step up, because clearly I didn't expect the shit to hit the fan.
Names of the house ICs were taken and they were told to liase with the house leaders to find 3 willing victims to take part in this debate. Today when the deadline came, my own lias'ed' house leader had nothing, even after frantic pushing. The other houses had something, though. I was half-scolded by one of the two teachers in charge for this for not pushing myself and the others to get names of the ICs and victims collated, so I got home quickly and went to task.
Clearly the house leaders have too much enthusiasm and too little brains, for the names they submitted were of people who weren't even aware they had been chosen. They must have found it a jolly old sport to dump some names in there, end of story. What followed was an exhausting trail of names I had to call and sms only to find out a few were busy with Orientation. To make things worse, this thinned out numbers already scant, for 3 was a number we needed to get from each house, and the average was 1.2.
Even worse. The rep for Atlas had no members at all, so I had to call her up. I didn't have her number, but I had a name and a person who could verify it for me, (she was another rep). The number I got yielded this conversation:
Me: Hi, I'm Joseph. Regarding the econs debate... yeah.
Denise: ah.
Me: uhh I only have one name here, and the person hasn't even responded. Do you mind if you pass me the other two names?
Denise: Huh?
Me: The other two names of the three you were supposed to provide?
Denise: Uhh I don't know what you're talking about!
Me: wait.. you do know about the econs debate thing right?
Denise: uhh... no?
Me: uhh are you even from MJ?
Denise: yeah...
Me: Were you not there for the meeting last week?
Denise: uhh what thing? Maybe you have the wrong Denise?
Damn, I had to check her name and phone number thrice, with each time confirming it was her. So I called again, but apparently she didn't know squat about this thing. This begs to answer, why the heck did she say 'ah' the first time round? And why is there one name volunteered for Atlas if she isn't the Rep? Man, this is driving me up the wall.
When a person leads something, he/she has to assume that the jobs delegated have been done properly. If not, checking each any every thing might as well make the one person in charge of the whole affair.
Seriously, of this whole thing I am most exasperated at the house leaders. Like WTF? who nominates people for such an event without actually asking the person if he or she consented/was free for it?
